Brian Dettmer: Book Autopsies

19 Dec

These sculptures were made by carving through layers of books. Love the illustrative effect, and use of the page edge color as a design element. Some have the feeling of M.C. Escher drawings. Artist: Brian Dettmer.

Perpetual Calendar

2 Nov

Great idea for and execution of perpetual calendar. Reminds me to slow down and look at the everyday number and letter. I’m inspired!

Font made from tea bags

7 Sep

A font made from tea bags is appealing to me first thing this morning. Some nicely-crafted examples in other “media” here, too. Clover Type is pretty. Soil Type has great detail. Is that based on Baskerville?

Rethinking the container

13 Jul

Refreshment and relaxation are not exactly the first things that come to mind when we see a freight container, but it could be time to cast a new eye on those big metal boxes. Macro|Sea creates swimming pools from containers. Big, bright, shiny, beautiful ones, installed in unconventional configurations and urban locales. Think of the custom color possibilities. See the installation on their site.

In keeping with their interests in tranforming the urban landscape, Macro|Sea is going to take on the strip mall. Please. Have at it. If the results are as refreshing as these pool installations, we’ll all feel better.
